Are You Looking at Art When You Go to an Art Fair?

Yes. But I also look at people.

A short visit to the art fair “Kunst For Alle” / “Art For All” in Copenhagen, turned into something more than just browsing paintings and sculptures. I brought my Leica M9 paired with the Summilux 50mm f/1.4 ASPH, not to document the art—but to capture the moments in between.

My wife was exhibiting too at a gallery, so of course I support her with pictures too, but I love to see the people and how they interact at an art fair. Special people and those who just have that expression that sticks out from the crowd.

Art fairs are full of expressions. Not only on the walls, but in the faces of those who wander through them. The curious glances, the quiet contemplation, the conversations that unfold in front of a canvas. These are the moments I look for.

The people who rests and brought their dog for example. I have a fling with dogs. They express a lot, when they sit there, waiting for their humans to move on. Thinking “what am I doing here”?

With the Leica, I move slowly

The M9 is not a fast camera by today’s standards, but it makes me deliberate. The Summilux lens, wide open at f/1.4, draws in light and isolates subjects beautifully. It’s not just about sharpness—it’s about character. And this lens has plenty of it.

I don’t ask people to pose. I wait. I observe. I let the scene unfold. Two woman with an interesting look. A couple debating a painting.
These are the stories I want to tell.

Photography at an art fair becomes a dialogue between two forms of expression. The art on display, and the art of seeing.

A quick side note

Be aware that artworks can’t be photographed without a context to it, being part of something else. Framed up close is a replica and can be prosecuted by the artist, if consent haven’t been given.

Moments Captured

No matter what there is around, I bring the camera. I watch and I capture moments I find interesting.

Join me on a workshop

  • and I will love sharing my tips and tricks with you. We look at camera settings on Leica (or whatever camera brand you bring), and we look into the world og light and how to capture moments.

The two-day workshops are planned for spring and early summer next year. Read more here: WORKSHOPS
If there is a demand also 3-day workshops including Lightroom and Capture One editing will be added. Let me know if this will be of interest for you? Comment below or send an email.
