One picture or a series?

A Journey Through the Blue-Toned Subway of Copenhagen

In the heart of Copenhagen, the subway transforms into a realm of its own, a universe distinct from the bustling city above. Through the lens of a Leica M9 paired with a 50mm Summilux f/1.4, this hidden world is unveiled in a series of photographs.  Taking a series of photos can be an interesting way of creating a story, in opposition to the one-shot standing alone. Both have their values, but sometimes a series of photos can be satisfying to do. Especially when entering an environment that is different from daily life. Like an underground metro station in Copenhagen.

Blue tones

The blue tone permeates each frame, casting a serene yet enigmatic atmosphere. The subway, often perceived as a mere transit space, reveals its deeper character. Shadows dance in the dim light, and the Summilux f/1.4’s wide-open aperture masterfully handles the often low-light scenery. Important to have a fast lens with f1.4, as the older Leica M9 is known for not handling ISO above 800 well.

The cool light set in the metro station created a look in the pictures, that isn’t obvious for the human eye. It changes when the camera looks at it, and makes it much more interesting.

The stories

Passengers become silhouettes in some light situations. Making their stories hinted at but never fully told. The architecture, with its clean lines and modern design, starkly contrasts with the organic movement of the people within. Each image captures a moment of stillness amidst the perpetual motion, inviting viewers to pause and reflect. A single frame frozen changes the way we look at things. That’s the power of photography.

A camera makes the difference

This series is not just a collection of photographs; it’s an exploration of the subway’s unique universe. It challenges the viewer to see beyond the surface, to appreciate the beauty in the mundane, and to find tranquillity in the chaos. Through the blue-toned photos, Copenhagen’s subway is transformed into a place of mystery and wonder, a testament to the power of photography to reveal the extraordinary in the ordinary.
This is a scene I will revisit and see what happens next.
