Zoom with your feets

In the heart of Trastevere, Rome, a chef takes a momentary respite from the bustling kitchen. Leaning against a weathered wall, his traditional white attire and hat stand out against the cobblestone street, a timeless scene that could easily be mistaken for a snapshot from the 1950s. Yet, this image was captured in 2016, a testament to the enduring charm of this historic neighborhood.

50 mm and zoom with your feets

The Leica M9, paired with a 50mm lens, was the perfect tool for this shot. The choice of lens allowed for a natural perspective, capturing the scene as the human eye would see it. By “zooming with your feet,” you find the ideal distance to frame the chef within the context of his surroundings. The parked cars and classic Roman architecture in the background add layers of authenticity and nostalgia to the photograph.

Although not an old car in the background, this will change over time. What seem ordinary today will change with time.

Be careful keeping the environment included in street photography, because that’s also a big part of the storytelling.

This image is more than just a moment frozen in time; it tells a story of tradition, hard work, and the simple pleasures of a quiet break. The chef’s relaxed posture, hinting at the balance between the demands of his profession and the tranquility he seeks in this brief pause. The black and white tones further enhance the vintage feel, blurring the lines between past and present.

In this photograph, you’ve captured the essence of Trastevere—a place where history and modernity coexist harmoniously, where every corner has a story to tell, and where even a simple break can become a timeless moment.

In two weeks time (there are still spots open) I go to Rome again, and look forward to seek the streets.

You can still join in but need to be quick. Read more about the workshop in Rome here: https://www.mortenalbek.com/vare/rome-masterclass-may-2025/
