The Stillness Between Moments

Reflections from Les Voyageurs, Copenhagen

There’s a kind of magic in the moments we don’t rush. The ones where nothing seems to happen—yet everything quietly unfolds. This is a story about one of those moments, captured not in motion, but in stillness.

A Pause Before the Meeting

I had a few minutes to spare before a meeting in Copenhagen. Not enough time to start anything new, but just enough to notice the world around me. I found myself at Les Voyageurs, a cozy spot with warm light and a quiet hum. I sat down, ordered nothing, and simply waited.

No action, sometimes, is the action.

Me with my beloved Leica M9 mounted with the Summilux 50mm f1.4 ASPH lens.

The Beauty of Simple Things

In front of me: a candle burning low, its flame swaying gently in the still air. A room filled with soft shadows and the kind of silence that invites observation. I didn’t reach for my phone. I didn’t check the time. I reached for my Leica M9, paired with the Summilux 50mm f/1.4 ASPH, and let the lens do what it does best—see.

Click.
A frame of stillness.
Click.
A moment of light and quiet.

There was no grand subject, no dramatic scene. Just a candle, a room, and the soft hush of anticipation. And yet, in that simplicity, there was something deeply beautiful. The waiter went in and out, but I seeked the silence. The quiet mood. Not the actions.

The meeting went well—better than expected, actually. But that’s a story for another post. What stayed with me more than the outcome was the space before it. The stillness. The reminder that not every moment needs to be filled. Some are meant to be felt.

Final Thoughts

Photography, for me, isn’t always about chasing the extraordinary. Sometimes, it’s about honoring the ordinary. The quiet. The unnoticed. The in-between.

So next time you find yourself waiting—don’t rush it. Let the moment breathe. You might be surprised by what you see.

    Great piece Morten
Enjoyed it and found it thought provoking – we do live such unnecessarily busy lives we can never come to calm. Thus a timely reminder. Thank you

    Thank you Morten.
“Sometimes, it’s about honoring the ordinary. The quiet. The unnoticed. The in-between.”
I think this is sound advice most of us can use everyday in our over
    scheduled fast paced world.
