The Pursuit of Light and Street Stories

On the streets, light isn’t just illumination—it’s the language our pictures speak.

When you learn to see light first, geometry and people fall into place, and stories begin to write themselves.

I arrange some workshops during the year, but the Leica Akademie Nordics organize this one. The focus of my upcoming workshop is The Pursuit of Light and Street Stories.

I just checked up with Leica, and places are filling up, so better grab the last spaces available quickly. We only have a small group to ensure the best possible experience and to give everyone full attention.

Leica Akademie Nordics in Copenhagen on Saturday, March 7, 10:00–15:00 at Leica Store Copenhagen, Ny Østergade 3.
All camera brands are welcome, and you can borrow a Leica M, SL, or Q for the day.

Why light comes first

I’ve written often that everything in photography begins with light—start by finding it, then let it shape the frame. From soft, bounced window light that sculpts form to hard sun carving graphic shadows, learn to hunt light and let it do the heavy lifting in your composition.

I prefer natural light over flash because it keeps me close to the scene—unobtrusive, present, and responsive. It’s a philosophy as much as a technique: read the sky, watch how light reflects off walls, and let the mood live in the highlights and shadows you accept rather than “fix.”

What we’ll explore together

Seeing light like a storyteller
We’ll walk and work in the changing Nordic daylight—reading direction, contrast, and colour temperature—and using them to anchor narrative moments.

Spring light in Copenhagen can be magical: still low sun, long shadows, and colour that pops against muted tones. It can be grey, but that doesnt mean light isn’t interesting and can be used for great photography. It’s just different, and as photographers we must know how to use the available light to our advantage. You’ll learn that no matter how the light is on the day we go.

Geometry, architecture, and people
We’ll use edges, planes, and repeating shapes to let the city’s structure carry the picture, with people as rhythm and scale. You don’t need to be nose‑to‑nose with strangers to make street stories—architecture, textures, and light can be the lead actors.

Whether you lean toward 28/35 for context or 50mm for presence and intimacy, or another focal length, the key is consistent distance and decisive framing. We’ll simplify gear to clarify decisions and make stronger pictures, fast.

Depth of field as punctuation
We’ll switch deliberately between shallow DOF for isolation and stopped‑down scenes when layers carry the story—no habits, only intent.

Handling highlights and embracing constraints
Harsh contrast is a gift if you understand what your medium does at the edge. We’ll talk highlight roll‑off, why digital clips feel “cliff‑like,” and how slight under‑exposure preserves tone in bright parts of the frame.

Who this is for (and what to bring)

Come with any camera. The workshop is designed to sharpen how you see—not to test your menu‑diving. If you’d like to try a Leica for the day, there will be loaner M, SL, and Q bodies available through Leica Akademie Nordics.
